FS#7727 - With RB, can't shutdown the iPod 4G when it's charging

Just loaded rockbox-ipod4gray-20070906-22:56, and noticed that the iPod can’t shutdown when conected to the battery charger: when I hold Play, RB correctly shutdowns, but then the iPod immediately shows the Apple logo and boots again into RB.
This behavior holds true with double boot and also now that I wiped the original Apple firmware and left Rockbox alone on the iPod.
I put the original OS in a file named apple_os.ipod in the root of the FAT32 partition but, when in Hold at boot time, RB doesn’t load it as it should.

iPod needs to be on to charge. Rockbox shouldn't even attempt to turn it off; that was fixed in  FS#5826  / r20745.

that is because apple os doesn’t shutdown, it just sleeps a bit and blanks the screen to maky you believe it is off….

But there seems to be a bug here: the correct thing for rockbox to do is deny the shutdown request and stay inside rockbox. But I’m no ipod person…

has this been fixed?

Is this  FS#6465 ?

I encountered a similar problem when installing Rockbox 3.2 on a iPod photo (4th Gen). While it was plugged in, I couldn’t turn it off. I was only able to when I unplugged it, then pressed & held the Play/Pause button.

You can’t turn off an Ipod that is connected to power. That’s a technical limitation – the hardware doesn’t charge when turned off, and plugging in power (same as USB) will power up the device. The behaviour of Rockbox 3.2 is correct here and there is no bug.

I can confirm that I still can shutdown a usb power connected Ipod (mini2g, using a usb power adapter) with a recent build. I assume this is related to the fact that a usb power connection isn’t displayed as charger connected in the battery debug menu. Interestingly the Rockbox Info screen shows the battery status as “charging”.

There might be a way to shutdown while a charger is connected: write a different value to PCF5060X_OOCC1 when shutting down. However, I don’t think the OF does this, and I don’t know if it is a good idea. Why do you want to shutdown while charging anyways?

I think the real problem here is that Rockbox will try to shut down when USB power is available, only to start up again. That’s related to  FS#5826 . Holding play should not cause a shutdown attempt when the iPod cannot stay off.

I think this task needs to be closed, but I’ll leave it open for a few more days to give others a chance to respond.
