FS#9868 - make voiceing of "d" and "p"

When configured to read (spell out) file names the letter “d” sounds very similar to the letter “e” and the letter “p” sounds very similar to the letter “b”. Possibly the system has been designed to produce sounds similar to “spoken”, rather than “spelt” sounds.

Try creating a file called “test d e b p .txt” and listen to RockBox spell it out.

Possibly an enhancement could be made by speaking lower case letters and spelling upper case letters, but I am less concerned about that. The similarity between “d” and “e”, and between “b” and “p” worry me.

Accents will differ, and voice quality will differ. This is why you can provide your own voice files

I don’t hear this - wonder if your voice clips are chopped off a little at the start? Possibly (if unlikely) related to  FS#8066

I suspect that  FS#8066  is unrelated - but I have been wrong before. :-(

I’m using an e200 v1. It is the start of the sound that worries me, not the end. It is not “pre-compiled” clips that are the problem, it is the “interpreted” reading of letters.

Possibly a clever algorythm is used to decide which phonemes to put into a talk clip and 26 simple ones are pre-arranged for spelling out.

When I know which letter is coming next I can convince myself that I can tell the difference, but If I don’t look it is *much* harder. It is the leading edge of the “d” and “p” that do not seem strong enough for me. The “eee” part is fine.

The letters are generated externally and stored in your .voice file (they’re just short clips). This probably isn’t a Rockbox issue.

Are you making your own voice file? If so, which voice are you using? If not, which voice file are you using?

This will be closely related to FS#23383, so close that I should have mentioned it first up. Sorry.

The current pronunciation of “d” and “p” is not nearly as bad as the old pronunciation of “a”, I’m just getting fussier. (The old “a” was bad enough that I thought it was missing.)

I think that I am using the current standard clips. How would I go about generating my own?
