PluginsRockbox features a plugin loader. Plugins are dynamically loaded from disk and executed. Plugins are little programs that Rockbox can load and run. Plugins have the file extension .rock and most are kept in /.rockbox/rocks/. Plugins stored in /.rockbox/rocks/ can be accessed and executed from the Main Menu -> Plugins. You may also select a plugin from the file browser to run it. Some plugins work as "viewers". Viewer plugins are executed automatically by "playing" an associated file (e.g. text files, chip8 games), or from the “Open with” option on the File Menu. Only one plugin can be running at a time. Plugins run in the GUI thread and have exclusive control over the user interface. This means you cannot switch back and forth between a plugin and Rockbox without exiting the plugin and starting it again. A plugin is loaded, run, and then exited, which returns control to Rockbox. Music will carry on playing while plugins are being run. Some plugins offer access to an "Audio Playback" menu from which you can adjust a number of playback-related settings (e.g. Volume, Repeat mode) and perform simple functions (e.g. Play/Pause, Next/Last track). Note for Beginners: Plugins come pre-installed when you download Rockbox. You don't download and install them yourself! Table notes: The table headings only mention base model numbers. For models with more than one hardware revision supported by Rockbox (listed as stable or unstable at http://www.rockbox.org), the table will be assumed to hold for all of them (e.g. e200 v1 and e200 v2), unless special note is made. Gigabeat refers to F, X and S models. Although the keymaps are different between Gigabeat F/X and Gigabeat S, the same set of plugins is currently supported by all of them.
